WORLD CYBER GAMES 2007 Weekend Recapped

October 15, 2007

WCG Finals recap

What an eventful weekend it was up in Sydney, long delays and steam errors ruined the first day of the Counter-Strike 1.6 competition which had looked so promising. However the venue itself was simply amazing, gaming booths, hardware performance booths, fast cars and even a boxing ring filled up the venue.

The weekend began with the long drive up from Melbourne with very limited food. It took just under 11 hours to get to where we needed to be, the Sydney Tower’s.

After settling into our 5 star apartment room we had a little exploring session of the city and had a quick look at the LCC competition. This was pretty much all that was done on the first day as we were all knackered from the trip up.

Second day began at 7.30am where we got our game faces on and headed out to the WCG venue for the opening ceremony and our first match at 9.30am. This wasn’t the case though due to all the delays there was no opening ceremony and our first planned match, well that just never happened. After 11 hours of waiting and having nothing to eat the competition format was changed from group stages to a double elimination bracket. DICEVIP finally had their first match against MERGE at 8.30pm where we were defeated 16-06 and after another hour of waiting around we played our loser bracket match against Alternate where we won 16-04.

The team quickly got out of the venue and headed straight for china town where we indulged in some Asian foods, no longer having grumbling stomachs we went back to our room and crashed out.

The final day of competition saw the team get defeated by ENEMY 16-12 and that was it for the DICEVIP team. Taking some last minute tourist photos and saying our farewells, the long WCG campaign had ended and it was time to head back to Melbourne.

Almost crossing the boarder back into Victoria we were extremely excited and ecstatic that we were out of NSW, but wait what’s that in the rear view mirror… blue and red lights lit up the mirror and we got pulled over. “Sir did you realise you were going 123km/h in a 100 zone”, said the officer. Received a speeding fine of $238 which could’ve been spent on plane tickets instead, how ironic. On that note the team all arrived back in Melbourne safely.

Sydney was a great experience overall, never seen a state that sold so many cars and had so many tree’s planted on the one strip of road. Driving across the Harbour bridge and seeing the Opera house was an experience of its own. Even though the team’s performance wasn’t as good as we had hoped for, the weekend away from Melbourne was great.
