I just happened to look at this today and to say the least I'm surprised

at the time of posting:

18,123 66,573 Counter-Strike
16,685 62,374 Counter-Strike: Source
9,480 21,527 Team Fortress 2
8,798 32,516 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
8,641 29,180 Call of Duty Black Ops - Multiplayer
8,501 22,617 Sid Meier's Civilization V
5,895 29,024 Football Manager 2011
5,202 13,939 Left 4 Dead 2
4,473 12,326 Portal 2
3,736 8,562 Battlefield: Bad Company 2

I wonder what the numbers are like when PS3 and XBOX are factored in

when people say CS is dead they obviously mean in Australia... Everybody knows CS isn't dead internationally :/

it's obviously on the decline, but not dead.

stupid that something as simple as a 1.7 update which had improved graphics, and better "spectator mode"

sold with full retail release would probably instantly bring back everyone listed from CS:S, MF2, BlackOps, BC2

I also wonder what the numbers would be like if all the nosteam players were factored in as well.

maybe they know if they bring out CS2 before dota2 and portal 2 not as much people would buy them... so to make more money they are gonna release two shitter games and then release the beast, CS2. its gonna be so good he cant even talk about it lol

Gabe Newell has some vendetta against CS. He refuses to talk about CS and gets visibly agitated if anyone asks him. I reckon he's cut that all his damn-fangled new games can't topple CS from the #1 spot. I check that stats page every month or so and CS is always #1, even straight after COD:BO was released. Fuck Gabe. Fuck Valve.

a former employee at valve headquarters posted on the steampowered forums a few years ago

the post was basically a paragraph saying that the former creator of cs, jesse cliffe or whatever, had a big fight with gabe newell. didnt reveal the nature of the argument, but basically said that the whole office environment was aware of cliffe telling gabe that counter-strike took valve to extreme highs and without it valve would have never taken off after half-life

gabe still has a personal vendetta against counter-strike since then

i'd rather they didn't make CS2. There's a pretty good chance it would be worse than Source on release given the current trend of modern FPS games.

I think the biggest issue is that the skill ceiling of every game post-CS is just way too low..

Out of pure coincidence the average gamer lends themselves to an easier game. It's all about the $$

The 3d artist website polycount had a competition for Team Fortress, where the best works would be selected to go into the Manconomy update and the winners would get a small percentage of the profits (like 1-2%)from their items selling.

Each winner got roughly $45 000 in the first two weeks after the items went on sale....

pretty sure this wont be possible for another 5 years atleast.

but u know in starcraft 2 and dota/war3 and stuff. u can play with ppl from just about newhere in the world, and theres no delay. (edit: i think there is a delay for hosting dota games from another country actually. think of heroes of newerth, where they host games off a server. same with sc2.

if cs could find a way to host the games off ssomething similar to the battlenet servers and we could play with ppl from europe / asia / america = dream.

maybe a bit longer than 5 years though, as i complain about rego while playing on a melb server from sydney :P

doesn't really matter if you play the game off a server, ping from aus to america = 250-300, so if you had a server in the middle of the ocean it would still be 125-150 each = unplayable.

If you play competitive enough SC2 you can notice the delay(lag) of 100-300ms if u were playing on NA or EU server

The current CS engine doesnt really deal with high latency all that well, especially compared to Cs:s and even BlackOps to an extent

over the past few months i've come to realise that the ipgn base is 100% pub

that is, people dont want to get better or anything. they just enjoy playing and keeping the level of competition low

theyre only in ipgn because they want to play counter-strike and make it mean something (the stats system)

is it no wonder that every single fps game released in the past 5 years has some sort of online ladder/stats system which tracks your progress/skill level? its a successful system and appeals to gamers

#32 thats true but you cant blame the majority of people for that, i mean whats the incentive to improve in CS now.. there is what 1 or 2 decent LANS to prac for every year and thats the main reason why people dont bother trying to improve or taking the game so seriously, at the end of the day it really is somewhat pointless to put in the extra hours when there is literally zero rewards to achieve with it in Aus.

Also people know that the vast majority of players that play properly or have a "team" have formed friendship groups over the years and they will literally not let any one else play or be open to bringing up newer players.

After all the circle jerking about what Gabe Newell wants to do or how Valve is retarded, it really comes down to one thing.

If a LAN comp was hosted in your city, would you get a team ready, prac a bit and compete?

This is especially relevant to us here in Australia as 95% of the player base won't be playing Internationally any time soon.

I sometimes wonder if people spend more time discussing whether or not this game is dead, than what they do actually playing it. Don't get me wrong, there is a smaller player base (Australian reference here) than what there used to be, but yet we can still fill WCG's and the rest without much effort. I think IPGN has obviously played a large role in making people put less effort into finding (and committing to) teams and scrimming against others who have done the same, but that's only because it is all they have known. Instead of saying that there is no LANs and that you have no reason to practice and or improve, why don't you put the effort in to find like minded people who also still share a passion for this game and play against other people who feel the same way. I for one know that if there was a larger amount of scrims my team would definitely be playing more often, but yet we struggle to find a team to play against at all, and thus; our keenness to scrim slowly dies one day at a time.

The power really is in your hands, if you will this game to survive and flourish in our country, then play your role, one player at a time we can bring back the bi-monthly lans, frequent tournaments and nationals; but you'll have to do your bit as well.

With WCG around the corner, we already see a whole bunch of players re-emerging from the woodwork with the attitude to play and compete, if we make this WCG a massive one, i'm sure we will see the repercussions of more frequent tournaments.

Get involved :)
