the prizes will happen, the cash is more unlikely

$5000 in prizes is literally just handing out 15 monitors that were probably used on the day

or a samsung galaxyS which is like $800 RRP still

"Just to let you know guys, we are supporting as many of the major games as possible, and not just the WCG titles, as we want to grow the whole community. But we need evidence this can work, so the more teams, the more likely (and the bigger the prizes) at the future qualifiers/events."

So basically I've had a chat with Casua1ty who's the event organiser. He will pretty much be in charge of WCG and Red Carpet Gaming events for this year. Hopefully he will be jumping on dice later tonight to clear up any further issues so I will just lay it down broadly.

What we need to do is to just get as many teams as possible to the quals.

The first qual (Syd) needs to get enough interest and teams for 1.6 to ensure that quals are then run at Melb and Bris (Talking like 10+ teams, but it's a very loose number). Then on top of that the whole comp needs to get a lot of interest to make sure we have 1.6 at the EB Expo.

If we can get enough interest, then we are talking 16 teams at EB ideally. Casua1ty would love to have more but would also run with less, it all depends on how keen the community is and how much interest we pick up. If we don't have enough interest then it's just the qualifiers that will be run.

As far as getting a team overseas, that's the biggest cost obviously and will depend on everything I have already mentioned. It's gotta be justifiable because no one wants to send a team overseas with only 20 spectators...

In the end, Casua1ty is an ex-cs'r and I'm sure a lot of you know him as well, he has our interests at heart and will be very flexible to make something work. The ball's really in our court to make it happen.

Keen up

Hey Guys, sorry about not getting to Dice earlier :( someone beat me to the punch :P

First things first, Chiz and rizE, love you to buddies :)

Drag0n has pretty much summarized our conversation excellently (thanks Drag0n :D), but to just add onto it, there's a couple of rough goals I have setup to justify to my bosses running these events. The first, is we do nothing. :( This is probably around the 8 team or less mark. The second is that we run the competition, we put up the cash and the prizes (and yes Gomez, the prizes are 100% happening, tls isn't a small organization, they cant just dog out on promising something and then running away - nor would I work with them if I thought they were anything like that). I would probably be able to justify this to my bosses at around 8-12 teams or so. Stage 3 is running CS 1.6 events in other cities and seeing what interest we get there as well (these would have cash and prizes as well of course). If there's enough support, I will then arrange flights and accommodation (and VIP entry to the EB Expo :D), and we will hold a National competition, starting initially with just cash and prizes, however if more and more interest is there, we will start sourcing funds to send a team overseas.

I know this sounds kind of dicey and harsh, but when I took on the job, tls told me "we are running SC2, Fifa and Tekken". I kinda went... uhhh wtf, what about LoL (a game I am sure all of you care about :P but there's a community for it to) and CS. So the compromise we reached was if CS shows enough interest, I can run it, but if it dosent, it dosent happen. So unfortunately we either do it this way, or CS just dosent happen at all.

If things dont work out, Drag0n also mentioned arranging the costs to send a team overseas (roughly 20k), and I said sure, I will do all the work and paperwork to get them into the WCG as Australia's entry, however I hope it dosent come to that :)

So TL;DR, Its all down to you guys. I want to run a National CS comp and send a team overseas, but I cant just pull 75k to run a National competition for something with no support.

If anyone has any questions, I troll all these forums most of the day (cept when in meeting as I was all day today), so leave a post and question, or PM me (or PM me and ask for e-mail/MSN/Steam).

Its kinda hard for the community to show interest in something that we're not even sure will go ahead, and with no information whatsoever about it. If you actually want interest to be shown then the we need to know far more details like:

- dates of all state qualifiers so teams can organise themselves and know which qual they'll go to (due to interstate teams etc).
- numbers of teams that qualify at each qual (like at the syd qual theres 2 paid spots - but would about unpaid invite spots like what theres been at every other 1.6 nats? etc).
- number of spots at the nationals (8? 16?).
- who's physically running the cs competition and do they know what they're doing, do they need any help, etc.
- when does registration open and how is it done (via that website im assuming - if not dice would be happy to help out with taking registrations for the cs comp).
- once registration has begun for qualifiers, keep team/player lists so we know whos attending and can be kept up to date etc.

The way it seems atm its just how its been the past 4 years @ wcg (horrible) with people from outside of the community running things who have no idea how things have been done in the past and should been done properly, and for some reason dont get help from people inside the community.

My suggestion would be to get help asap from someone who has a lot of experience running these kinds of competitions so that it can actually be done properly for once (ie. myself, beedee, unpro, gomez, many others).

And also its really quite hard for everyone (especially people not from sydney) to keen up and show interest when we literally have no idea whether or not our state qualifier will even run as it purely depends on whether or not sydney gets enough teams (which in the past has generally had the lowest average turnouts compared to melbourne/brisbane).

Also i may just be speaking for myself here although id bet many would agree with me - while those prizes look fantastic, they're not really quite necessary, and especially if its the difference between the event actually running or not.
Is it possible to lower/remove prizes (except for the top 2 team's paid flights) while gauranteeing the event and all qualifiers will happen 100% (and just have prizes for the EB event not the qualifiers)?

theres key people in each state and about 3 LAN cafe's (2 really) that are playable for counter-strike 1.6. Those key people and the LAN cafes, elysium mcity and istar-(lol) should run the entire qualification side of things because we know what todo and how to run it

You should just fund the event and dont come near it

Why would anyone even play if they cant get overseas from you guys? I can get my own organisation to pay for my teams trip if we played and won rofl.

I've helped run the 1.6 side of this event on a national scale for the past 2 years, and been involved prior to that. In my experience the most crucial error organisations make, and repeatedly make is not getting the information out early enough for people to generate interest. This is not just limited to the 1.6 side of things. Last year the FIFA competitors were given a week's notice for the national qualifier, and not much was different in 2009 where all games (FIFA, Guitar Hero and CS 1.6) were given similarly short notice to attend the national final. A competitor flew from Adelaide to Sydney with 3 days notice to attend the guitar hero qualifier. People are there waiting for the information, however need the time to plan and organise their attendance at the event.

You need to market the event to teams as well, and given the somewhat tattered reputation WCG has given itself over the last 4 years, generating interest is more than just posting information on a website somewhere on the internet and hoping people will find it. This can still work, and work very well, you just need to get the information out there and teams will come. Building, and hoping they will come will simply not be enough.

I feel your pain though, as last year I was given 2 weeks to organise an entire nations worth of qualifiers (wouldn't have happened without the help of people like davestr1zl, beedee, gomez, pacman) and was then ousted at the final notice, being told I would not be flown to Sydney to help run the final. However, that's another story.

guys this is going to be harsh but it is true, the event people apart from casualty dont care about the this community. its basically, here's the event if you want to play 1.6 then show up on the day and play no promises of a nationals.

sadly this is reality, past years no matter how shit they were the MAIN "focus" was on 1.6. as for this year, the more corporate side of things the event organizers dont really care about the communities of the gaming world.

they just put the event out (date, time, games) and whoever hears about it (DOING research finding out yourselves) plays. this might not sit well with the 1.6 community but just got to learn to adjust to these situations.

i know it sucks, but its what we have. the more privatized something gets the voices of the community gets drowned, and neglected. bottom line its going to be a different WCG not community based, more of a corporate based planned event.

just have to find the information where ever it might be.
