pretty cool that valve are taking the competitive side of the game so seriously, could potentially be good if a cs2 was ever made (it also could just be purely their main marketing plan to kill off the lol/hon competition without a doubt, as its caused a lot of hype)

yeah theyre pretty much bringing in all the top teams.

pretty much valve are saying a big 'fuck you' to teams like fnatic and SK, who would regret not sticking to dota / being invited to this tournament. especially fnatic though, as they are completely smashing the hon scene, and would prob win this.

haha #2

people just like easy games designed for a casual audience with the lowest skill cap in any recent competitive game aka LoL

free to play helps too, i guess

HoN can be a bit questionable at times but it's pretty solid imo, going to be interesting to see how dota2 turns out

and i wouldn't count LoL/HoN out yet, i highly doubt comps will continue to have this large a prize pool but yeah time will tell :D~

id count hon out, lol might be able to survive with its larger player base but hons playerbase couldnt be more ready to leave (despite it, imo, being a far better game than lol). A lot of the lol players wont like the harder gameplay of dota either

yeah hon should drop significantly. lol will lose some, but should be okay still as their playerbase is massive. just there wont be any 'professional' teams playing hon/lol anymore.

LoL have done a great job at not being like dota/HON, but TBH i think it sucks. Not being able to last hit and character choices makes it silly.

Also side note, anyone else MAD because they took out random gold in hon ????

no you cant deny*, they wanted to make it more balanced btw melee and ranged heroes or some crap.

and issit true u have to pay to play certain heroes (similar to what hon are doing with their free to play), if so...thats just gay tbh.

no, you gain IP from playing games and you can buy heroes with it. You get a free rotation of champs each week so you can play them whilst saving IP up.

You can also pay money to unlock bundles of champs.

The game still takes alot of skill to play. Dota2 wont kill LoL, Riot has a massive amount of cash. And now that MLG has even picked it up, its going to keep growing.

hon's free to play accounts have the exact same business model to LoL's accounts, the only difference being hon's rotating hero pool is 15 not 10, and obviously the prices for heroes in both games differ (both can be bought with irl money or for free by playing lots though)

i think hon will practically die off, and lol will take a big hit in numbers but will probably still do ok and will probs continue to buy their way into major tournaments like wcg, dreamhack etc to keep popularity (unless valve outbids them which would be very possible)

will be interesting to see what dota2's business model is, id assume similar to hon 2.0 with an outright payment for all content then additional microtransactions for cosmetics

LoL's numbers are greatly inflated by ridiculous prizepools and buying their way into competitions like IEM and WCG.

Obviously if DOTA-2 is prepared to do the same, they will pick DOTA-2 since it is sure to have better gameplay since they have the lunary of doing some things the same, and changing things that didnt work in LoL/HON.

Seems like 2011 is the year of sequels (Portal2, DOTA-2 and now an article on fragbyte(in swedish) about CounterStrike 2

HoN missed the boat with the f2p business model..

I also cannot agree with the amount of money valve are forking out before a public beta has even been showcased.

Let the game come out THEN shell out big bucks to foster attention. Honestly the way valve are approaching this just makes no sense and I'm really not surprised at all.

This is vintage Gabe Newell anyway.

Its just marketing and it makes perfect sense imo. The sheer number of people that are going to tune into the stream all over the world thats broadcasted in 4 diff languages, to not only get the very first look at the new game but to see one of the biggest esports tournaments in history and see what all the hype's about etc is going to be incredible.

I think spending the marketing money in that area is money far better spent than say a TV ad or something as it hits their target audience directly, and the amount of interest and intrigue its caused is undeniable, and thats what marketing is all about anyways.

They also need to set themselves apart from the competition and give a big reason why players should play dota2 instead of hon/lol etc, which unfortunately simply having the best game will not do (if it even is the best game), and they've obviously given the biggest reason ever for the competitive-minded players atleast.

dave.. I don't get why you responded to my argument when you are going off on your own tangent that's pretty much unrelated.

Everything can be achieved exactly how you have just explained but AFTER the game is polished. No one even knows if the game is even CLOSE to balanced just yet. This makes it basically an eSports lottery where the teams that place well get over-rewarded for a game that hasn't even exited beta.... I need not explain any more.

TBH I'm happy the DOTA genre is finally moving away from S2 and Riot Games. S2 weren't big enough to do HoN justice and LoL is only where it is because of the ridic. amount of money Riot has pumped into it.

It can be done after the game is 'polished and balanced', but the reason i said is because it draws in massive attention from being BOTH the first time you get to view the game AND the biggest esports tournament ever (that i know of).

The game has been in beta testing since late last year with all of the top teams being involved in it from the beginning, including (as far as im aware) the 16 invited teams to the tournament. They've all been playing it for over half a year, as well as it being designed to play the same as dota1 with all the same heroes etc, so its far from a lottery.

People do know if the game is close to balanced or polished yet, we're just not those people. They're obviously confident about the state of the game so i'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But the main point was that this is a marketing move, and its a fantastic one at that.

Dave, you really should watch DJ Wheat's 'One more Game' show.

One of the head's of DOTA's competitive community (toby1kanoby) is echoing exactly what I've been saying (the fact that there's so little information on dota2 and very little alpha/beta time with the teams involved in this massive comp).

"People do know if the game is close to balanced or polished yet, we're just not those people". That couldn't be any further from the truth, that is really baseless. Learnig balance for these types of games takes a long time... especially one that hasn't even escaped its NDA. You really should stop wall of texting and provide a source when you respond in the fashion you do.

Id hardly call 10 months 'very little time' for beta (Its been in beta since ATLEAST november last year, and most/all top dota teams have been invited from the beginning so its not just a bunch of randoms testing it). On top of this the balance is based of dota - from what ive read in patch notes they've ported all heros and kept them exactly the same (ability/stats-wise).

And when i said "people do know if the game is close to balanced or polished yet, we're just not those people" - how is that far from the truth? Note: im not saying the game IS polished or balanced, just that we dont know whether it is or not, and there is a large group of top dota players (ie. all 16 teams attending this comp) that do.

I get what you're saying, but my main point again that this is purely a marketing move and its fantastic marketing. There are going to be so many people that tune into the stream its gonna be ridiculous. Is it the best move for the competitive side of the game? I dont know yet we'll have to wait and see. But like i said i doubt valve would be throwing so much money into something they know so many people will watch if they werent confident about the state of the game.

I know it's pure marketing but you need to understand that at gamescomm whether or not big money is being thrown around, it is still going to get massive attention/exposure.

You keep missing my point here and it is that YES taking such an initiative is a good marketing IDEA, but it would be better served once the game is out and fostering a new audience (not to mention at the LEAST after the game has had its NDA lifted, cmon).

I'm not missing your point. In terms of marketing, no i dont think it would be as good, ive already explained why.

Every single site ive seen this news post on (aus competitive gaming sites, facebook, international gaming sites, game review sites, etc) the feedback has been overwhelming as its going to be an amazing thing with millions tuning in from all audiences (casual, hardcore,e tc), to get the first look at the game, and see the biggest esports tournament ever.

Split that up and theres significantly less incentive to tune in (i know i for one wouldnt care to watch either individually, but am utterly intrigued to watch the event).

Do you want to try to deny that this event wont get significantly more viewers than a gamescom announcement alone?

agree with 34.
imo itll get more a lot more views than if they were to host the tournament after the game is released. they made no official announcements for like a year, then bam. hype level = high

+ a lot of ppl dont even care about the competitive side of dota. they'll just want to play the game. this move is pretty much making EVERYONE tune in, and all the sponsors or event organisers or wateva are gonna see the number of viewers, which im guessing is a big deal.

we'll just have to wait and c
