Memories

If you guys don't know already, I have a weekly column that I write about eSports for games.on.net, and for next Sunday's column I'd like to present a compilation of memories.

What are your best memories from playing competitive games? It could be an amazing match you took part in, the miracle of all miracle comebacks, the first time you got to represent your country at an international tournament, the first time you ever got to play on a big stage - anything that just really evokes a physical reaction or makes you crack a smile when you think about it.

It doesn't have to be a super long story, but a couple of paragraphs minimum would be great. (Don't worry about spelling or grammar that much - I can fix it up myself, but make sure it's readable at least!)

If there's some good stories here, I'll pick a few and use them for my column next week! Make sure you start off your memory with your first name and nickname, like this: Alex "dippa" Walker

=)

Playing CS 1.6 in a team called deathbyclick (nixske, dippa, vz, fuLLi) for most of 2008 and attending Nationals 08(i think, you can fix it up.. the one we played together)

Fondest memory of the tourney was a game against Foxhunt(Gameplex) whilst being under pressure for most of the game and being the definate underdogs(not in our eyes) after losing(i think)CT side, we ended up coming back to win the game and placing the highest i've placed in a nationals(which i think was 5th but we drew with 4th in the comp(Peetygs team, ha).

Funny thing was, i was so "in the game" at that point of which i didn't even realise that they were raging so badly and Cozeh(a player from Foxhunt) packed up and left. ~ Can be seen on dicevip youtube video ~

Being friends with both the teams now its good to have a bit of a laugh about it time to time, but yes that has to be one of my highest moments in competitive gaming.

The first awesome memory I have was joining a team called XR in 2005 in melbourne who were the best team in the state since practically the beginning of CS, if you played CS alot back in those days you wanted to be in XR and you had to be lucky or know someone in the team to get a shot, I guess it was a little bit of both for me. Even though we never won a national competition (coming 2nd at ACON5 losing to f-zer0 was the closest) we didn't lose a comp or bo3 series in Melbourne that entire year, it was one of my favourite teams because I got to play alongside people I groupied in CS (snoopy and destroyer).

Without a doubt the greatest memory I have in CS would be representing Australia for the first time overseas in WCG 2007, a feeling you can't quite explain when you have put alot of years and hours into a game and it finally pays off. Everything about that one competition was pretty amazing for me because it was with the most fun and best team in terms of ability i've played with (SQL - rize apoc pupajon soren messi) and being in my hometown of Sydney. We beat our old rivals Immunity to win WCG.au and had some intense games in semi finals vs some other players I used to groupy in StensGaming (dav1o and co). At that stage I didn't think we would 100% win the comp I just knew we had a shot if we played well which we did. Going to America and playing vs the best teams in the world for the first time is something I (and the other SQL guys) will never forget as it was all our first time to play in something as big as that, even though we didn't get out of our group we tried our best and had an amazing time.

Best Game / Comeback
At that same WCG tournament we were placed in quite easily the hardest group in the tournament and had to face up against the #1 team in Denmark (NoA) and #1 French team (emL) also another really good underated team at the time called K23 from Khazakstan. After losing the first game in our group to NoA 16-10 we beat the Colombian team and were up against K23 who had just knocked off emL in a huge upset. Our entire chances of passing through came down to this game and we were in a bad position halfway through losing as the easier side (CT) on de_nuke, one round changed the whole game when we managed to eco them and bring the scores back to 14-14, the final round I was left in a 1v3 rotating to topsite through the lobby, I managed to kill two people and had no time to search for the 3rd person before the bomb would blow, I threw my grenade at the ladder and jumped onto the bomb out of all the places he was up there and we won the round and the game and kept our chances alive, everytime I think about that I get a smile on my face.

In the end we weren't good enough to pass through our group after we lost badly to emL but we finished the groups with our heads held high after being 3W 2L and finding out later that emL won the entire competition and NoA came 2nd with K23 the only team to beat emL that weekend.

The End d:).

In a similar fashion to rizE I think the best moment for me was at one of the AGS lans when i was playing with gomez, rixeh, doug and vex (only lan I ever finished podium) and we were vsing an a-gamers mix with tegs, mitch (cant remember his alias) jim and gonzo. We had been beating them pretty convincingly but lost a lot of momentum and would have had to eco on the last round if i had lost it. Came down to a 1v5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx1GKu58TWg 25 seconds in) which I won. Ace clutched some of the guys I had looked upto for years in one of the most important rounds of a game i've played. felt good to know all the time spent playing and getting dogged from teams for being too online or whatever had actually meant something.

I'll make this an easy read for you Dippi

-Only played CS online when I was 12/13/14 years old because I was too young and intimidated to go to LAN cafes.
-Played in 96 for a few years and practiced like 4-5 nights a week
-Eventually we got lucky as iStarzone held their 3rd big competition (18 team double elimination lol) and there was a spot for us
-We were seeded 3rd last because we had minimal lan experience.. team was sommi/jairs/busta/Stevey/RonaN(george)
-Ended up winning like 6 games in a row or something. Beat bronx and ichor and other big players in teams because they were unprepared.
-Came 3rd at the tournament. We left the cafe at 11:15pm at night
-This one event where we practiced and practiced and got a solid result... was the real start of the next 8 years of our cs careers. Sent many of us around Australia and met a lot of people and gamed a lot

mine would be the k23 game. beating the only team to beat emL in the tournament. We eco'd them as CT to get it 14-14, i remember pushing outside on nuke with a deagle, just got to the entrance to T mid and there were 2 left one standing in the middle of t mid looking at radio and one in radio, i 1bulleted the awper in t mid, ran and pick up his awp then started exiting out t mid again calling last in radio. Decided to take a random running unscope shot at the right wall and headshotted the last in radio room. Ashame i could never see the demo :(

^ hands down the best eco of any Aussie team overseas, I remember hitting 2 guys in radio room in the elbow and seeing them both backflip after getting deagle hs by pjay thru the wall from outside, followed by screams all around. we would of eco'd NoA aswell if i didnt cake that 1v1 vs zonic haha

Its not a single event, but for me the best memory would be the 2003 eswc journey. The whole forming of the fzer0 2003 lineup, the personal burn from wcg 2002 defeat ~6months earlier, people thinking we'd picked bad players to step into departing players shoes, how committed we all where, the belief we had in ourselves and in each other, the drive to win, and to prove, emphatically, we where the best without question to the entire community.

Being unproven and under respected after an alcohol induced crash and burn at our first lan tournament at Siege lan on the gold coast, the eswc 2003 state qual was the first real step, beating nK when the majority thought they where the clear cut best team in Aus, shifting community opinion about us from has beens and never where/would be's, to possibles, to contenders, to favorites from states to nationals, juggernauts of the game, which we fed on, aniahlateing the national qualifier in what probably still is the most dominant display there's been at an Australian national event, and it all happened during the "peak" of Australian cs.

The eswc worlds, first time overseas for most of us, wanting the challenge of taking on SK, ultimately taking on 5 ~world top 12 ranked teams of the era, cheering when we where live drawn with SK, the #1, and titan the emerging danish team (to the bizzare looks of most who thought we must be retarded wanting to be drawn in that group), playing 5 world class opponents with 4k neph and gg in the second group round after knocking out titan, falling an agonizing 1 round short of progressing to a final 8 showdown with eventual runners up zEx after our group produced 3 drawn games, 2 of which where ours vs 4k and neph. It was devastating, but at the same time incredibly satisfying that we where able to genuinely contend on the world stage, even if it wasn't reproduced down the years for a wide variety of reasons.

Second, would be TBGL season 3? final comeback, with nk and their legion of fanboys up one end of TB screaming and cheering every frag and round win to intimidate us, losing ct half 10-2, only to win t half 11-1 dropping only the 1st gun round, roaring the entire half to make sure they received it back in buckets. The ultimate match and moment in the f0 nK rivalry.

But like dave said, there's really so many.

The first time i was asked to play a game called counter-strike.

---

On my way to soccer one day i had seen a sign in a neighbouring suburb advertising a net cafe, online games, gaming cards, warhammer and all that stuff.

A family friend of ours was into warhammer, magic the gathering and warcraft, so i asked my mum if i could go in and have a look some day.

A few days had passed and i asked if we could now go there, so, she went and did the shopping and i went down the stairs to my first ever net cafe.

Opening the door was an experience, staring you in the face was a table of 6 or so people, all playing warhammer, another table had a few painting their models, and then there was the counter where i was greeted with a friendly 'Hello'.

I didn't respond for a few seconds as i looked into the distance, rows, and rows, and rows of computers.

It was quite a sight to behold, momentarily stunned i then replied to the man, 'i would like to use a computer until my mum comes and picks me up and she will pay you then', he said 'That's all good' and gave me a ticket.

I sat down looking around the desktop for the wc3 icon, as i found it, the guy next to me asked me if i wanted to play a game called counter-strike.

I told him i had no idea what that game was but i had played a little bit of ctf, but didnt really know what i was doing, that was fine with him, he and his friend next to him came over and loaded it up, showed me where to put my hands to move around, and loaded me into their lan server.

After the first 10 minutes of running around holding the mouse down shooting at people like i would in ctf, they explained to me that i had to tap the mouse to make the bullets more accurate.

After half an hour i was starting to kill people, i learnt how to strafe out to surprise people, to hide in corners to gain the advantage, what the best guns were and how to move around more efficiently.

After an hour of playing cs_speedrun with 12 other people in the same room, my mum showed up, i didn't want to leave.

I was hooked.

i miss 1.5,
the days of infernoLAN,
playing/pracing with you f0 guys running around with no clue,
playing/pracing with all the locals at infernoLAN,
staying up until 3am on school nights to play cs,
joining and creating clans with people that i didn't even know, for us all to then become good friends and play with each other almost every night,
winning my first ever cs match in some amateur comp with all my mates,
skipping school to go to the local net cafe to play cs,
demo'ing every online match i possibly could,
the days when you couldn't connect to GA servers because they were always fucking full,
hacking because you could and reaper OGC was fucking sick,
raging at some guy called jan_tan because he was ALWAYS first, with 50 kills on every map,
pissing off the GA admins,
i also miss pES.

ummm yer when CSi won the last 1.5 comp in aus (was a syd comp tho..32 teams ) was stoked..there were a few good teams missing and at the grandfinal the other team 'concept' surrended...was kinda dirty quite sure we would of won anyway (we slammed them earlier in the comp) but yer overall....sgl....sgl was fucking hektic...in the prime there was like 45 teams n that shit was fucking wrong.

anyway yer good thread.
