ZAM/MC questions

Hi DiceVIP,

I had intended to start playing CS a bit more this year, as I've moved out of a residential college (which had firewall issues) to a share house. (Some of you may recognise me from my occasional visits to ESAU and this site.)

Unfortunately, the house I've moved into is situated behind a RIM, which apparently has serious congestion issues. We will therefore never be able to get ADSL2+ here, and our ADSL speeds range between 0 and 4 Mb/s. Living with four other people, this is not a viable setup for gaming.

I still want to play CS, so I will making time this year to go to MidCity or ZAM (or elsewhere) on a regular basis. I have been to both in the past, but wanted to learn a few more details to see whether this plan is viable.

Specifically:

Do both places have reliably good ping for online CS?

Do both places have EAC installed or allow it to be installed for pugging and the like?

Are they both air-conditioned (I know MC had an issue of that sort in the past)?

Is there a major price difference between the two?

What are ZAM's opening hours?

Does either place have CSP or allow it to be installed?

Where am I more likely to see other 1.6 players? I'm not looking for a team right now but it's always nice to meet and scrim with other players on LAN.

Does either place require you to own CS to play it online through Steam? This is no problem for me but useful to know if I want to scrim with friends at LAN.

TL;DR - Where do you go to play online CS from LAN, and why?

Both places have great ping for online CS, from my experiences occasionaly midcity will be more likely to lag due to the extreme large number of people there, but its usually minimal if at all.

Neither will have EAC installed, both will allow you to install it just like any ordinary pc though (zam might need the owner to do it though)

Both are airconditioned, with zam's generally being better (midcity is fine unless ur in one of the little, quieter rooms)

zams opening hours are like 11am-9/10pm (give/take a couple hours, it changed a few months ago and i forget), midcity is open 24 hours

neither place will have CSP installed, both allow it to be installed (again, zam may require the owner to do it to access cstrike folder etc)

likely to find 1.6 players - probably at neither tbh, not unless by huge luck in which case midcity is more likely but still very unlikely

zam will require you to own CS if u plan on playing online (which it sounds like u do, if u play strictly on LAN then its not required, zam will also set up a dedicated lan server for you), midcity sort of doesnt require it BUT they have a limited amount of free accounts and they will regularly log you out which is very annoying - therefore both places its safer to have ur own copy of CS

TL:DR - midcity better pcs, LCD monitors - ZAM worse pcs, CRT monitors. ZAM is quieter and ur likely to get better service, midcity is open 24/7. Both require you to own CS. U decide.

note: if ur planning on getting into competitive scene, midcity is probs better so u can get used to their setup as most/all comps will be held there.

Thanks Dave, very helpful as usual. It sounds like they're both good enough to try out for a while before choosing one.

I'm surprised you don't think I'd see 1.6 players there though. There have always seemed to be a few around ZAM on the rare occasions I've been there on a non-comp day. Have things really dropped off that much in recent months/years?

I stopped by ZAM the other day, nothing but WoW players.. Granted I was there at midday and thats generally before CS players wake up..

Went to MC on the same day and it was basically full and very noisy.. Both are fine for playing online cs.

Just by the sheer number of people that turn up to MC your more likely to be able to play someone on LAN

personally i would go to mcity, although it's a LOT more packed and you probably would prefer zam for online CS since it's quieter. you should probably get used to it since every lan comp is loud and since comps are held there it'd be more beneficial if you were to get used to the set up.

and what dave said

and btw the pings are bout the same so no issues there
