Immunity Interview, pre-ESWC Masters

Australia's own http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/au.png Immunity are set to play at the ESWC Masters in Cheonan today, Monday 4th May. The groups that were drawn randomly, ignoring any seedings, were released yesterday and sparked much controversy. The group-stage will see Immunity facing 3 of the best teams in the world - Sweden SK, Sweden Fnatic and Poland Wicked (former MYM) respectively. While Australia's finest have been busily practicing against some local korean, asian and other world-class teams during their precious few days in South Korea before the ESWC Masters competition kicks off, they were still able to spare some time out of their busy schedule to catch up with their friends here at www.dicevip.com to answer a few of our questions. They were answered by the entire team, as their coach, http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/au.png Adrian 'xs1v' Holler, sat down with them to relay our questions!

What has your daily schedule been like since your arrival in South Korea?

Our daily schedule has mainly consisted of waking up and heading to a LAN centre to practice as many teams and for as long as possible each day. This has proven difficult at times as we’ve  discovered in Korea there are minimal teams to practice besides the local team http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/kr.png  WeMadeFox and other teams arriving for the ESWC Masters in Cheonan. After practicing for the course of the day we proceed to have dinner and a quiet drink before heading to sleep to again repeat the process the next day.

What top teams have you been practicing both online or lan prior to this event, and what have some of the scores and results of those games been?

Online the top tier teams we have played against have mainly been http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/kr.png WeMadeFox along with a handful of local Korean teams. The online practice sessions have been quite hard as all online games we played have been on 24” screens running at 60hz. On LAN we have been playing the Singapore Titans and today we have had a chance to play against http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/no.png Alchemists and China wNv. Our LAN results have been a lot better than our online results obviously; however our major focus is to use these games for practice and to improve our play – scores only count come competition time.

ESWC Masters GroupsHow do you feel about the groups that have been selected, and more specifically your own team's group, and what do you think about them not using seeds to arrange them?

To be honest the group we were dealt is extremely hard, it is certainly a mountain to climb. Things happen for a reason and there is no point worrying about the groups that have been drawn. People dream about playing against one of the teams in our group, we have the chance to play against three of the best teams in the world. We are going in with a very positive mindset, we couldn’t call ourselves Australian without a positive never say die attitude and this is the spirit we’re going to be bringing with us into groups. The whole reasoning behind ESWC Masters not using seeds from what we have been informed was the fact that ESWC is no more. As a result the government officials decided it was simply easier to draw the groups at random. We personally believe the competition would have generated more interest with seeds - however that is not our decision to make.

Knowing all of Australia is behind you, and are willing you to pull off a mammoth upset, do you think it's achievable, despite your much fancied rivals?

We believe anything can happen on gameday and we are not just saying that. As evidenced throughout many competitions in the past upsets do occur, there isn’t any reason if each and every one of our players is 100% in the game and a few things go our way that an upset is on the cards. There is no denying the teams we are playing feature mammoth line-ups and famous names in CS. In saying that, no team is unbeatable and we’ll be going in as hard as we can.

Are you treating this competition as practice for the upcoming Kode5 next week, and will 'poor' progress or results in ESWC Masters mean anything negative for you as a team?

We are by no means treating this competition as practice for Kode5. We did not come all this way to play international teams to simply practice them. Results whether good or indifferent will simply amplify the teams weaknesses and strengths and clearly illustrate what we work is required to step up to the next level.

How does Korean gaming differ from our own scene? Could you see yourselves placing well consistently if Immunity were a Korean team?

To be honest from what we have been exposed to thus far in terms of the Korean counter-strike scene I believe we would easily be up there if http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/au.png Immunity was a Korean team. http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/kr.png WeMadeFox is the only standout team as they are without doubt a very well structured and disciplined team who have evidently practiced a lot in preparation for this competition. We have only played a handful of other Korean teams so it is quite hard to comment on the general gaming scene over here after having such little exposure. http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/kr.png Solo from http://www.dicevip.com/site/images/flags/kr.png WeMadeFox summed it up for us when we asked him which teams we should practice – his response was blunt and to the point - South Korea only have one or two decent teams to practice. Special Forces is a far more popular game here with it being played frequently at café’s and also shown on local television.

The whole reasoning behind ESWC Masters not using seeds from what we have been informed was the fact that ESWC is no more.

That makes bit more sense now.

Hopefully I get home in time to watch them play.

Go Immunity!
